Even if they have exceptional ageing potential, we recommend tasting Sauternes from their earliest youth.
They do not have tannic astringency and their aromatic complexity is therefore fabulous!

Catalog Autumn-Winter
2018-2019

1996 has been an outstanding vintage, often better than 1995 in the left bank.

The cabernets sauvignons got ripe slowly thanks to a temperate summer without excessive heat or dryness. In the Medoc and the Graves, wines are well-balanced and complex, with an aromatic distinction and a high-quality of tannins unequalled in the previous 20 years.

We guarantee that all wines of the 1996 vintage come directly from the producers’ cellars or from wine cellars located in Gironde.

A young oenologist from Cahors, having studied in the great classified growths of Léognan, Xavier Copel decided in 1996, under the Primo Palatum brand (in Latin: taste first), to select and age the best wines from the great southwest of France, from Bordeaux to the borders of the Languedoc, all from very old vines. The unsuspected qualities of these great terroirs have been magnificently revealed thanks to him and we can only regret the end of this wonderful experience in 2007.

Sauternes, a "top cream" 100% Semillon vinified in new barrels and aged on lees, was undoubtedly one of the great wines of the appellation.

Always a reference in Graves, with this intense bouquet of fresh soil, smoky taste and pine resin specific of Bordeaux vineyard. Its location in Bordeaux geography make it the most precoce wine of the left bank, an avantage in fresh vintage.

Clos du Marquis is no longer the second wine of Léoville-Las Cases, but a wine in its own right produced on the parcels adjoining Léoville-Poyferré and Lagrange. In any case, his exemplary consistency for more than 30 years now commands respect.

With the help of Michel Rolland, Léoville-Poyferré has gained in depth since 1993, voluptuousness of texture and ability to age. It is now approaching the quality of its prestigious neighbours in which it is landlocked: Léoville-Las Cases and Pichon-Lalande. The competition between the three Léoville is intense but Léoville-Poyferré now prevails with an easier, more voluptuous approach, and a superior quality/price/pleasure ratio.

Even if their evolution always involves a period of austerity, Léoville-Barton wines have a supreme class and elegance, due as much to the advanced age of the vines as to meticulous work.
