Newsletters Futures 2017

Under the name « gems », we refer to unsung producers who make admirable wines due to their excellent vineyards and their own talent.

These wines are always produced in very small amounts, in vineyards maintained as gardens by gifted and meticulous wine-growers. Even if they do not make the headlines of magazines, they highly deserve to be discovered and tasted for their exemplary quality.

Oenologist by training, Xavier Copel undertook in 1996 to enhance the great terroirs of the South-West by creating the "Primo Palatum" brand, with the help of renowned producers in each appellation such as Château Le Cèdre (Cahors), Domaine de Cauhapé (Jurançon), etc. After 12 vintages, he decided to put an end to this adventure, which was acclaimed on all sides.

Since 2016, it has been back under its own brand "Xavier Copel" with a selection extended to wines from Bordeaux and Spain. And always the same qualitative ambition: a partnership with only one winegrower per appellation, a selection of old vines in native varieties, a "grand cru" ageing in Burgundy barrels. www.copelwines.com

Full-bodied, fat and with a characteristic vanilla woody taste, the dry white wine of Lynch-Bages plays the charm and fabric card. Less than 2000 cases produced each year, far insufficient for global success.

Galloni (Vinous) : 92/100 « The 2017 Lynch-Bages Blanc is gorgeous. I admit I am not usually a fan of the Blanc here, but the 2017 is terrific. »
Martin (Vinous) : 88-90/100 « The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity, touches of grapefruit, melon and pineapple leading to a slightly blank but fresh. »

A 4 ha plot selection from Château Rigaud, La Mauriane is not yet another luxurious cuvée on the right bank but a wine built on fine grain tannins where the brilliance and precision of the fruit prevail.

Martin (Vinous) : 90-92/100 « The 2017 La Mauriane has quite an intense bouquet with small black cherries and Indian ink scents. It is almost like a kid brother of Château Pavie! »

Selection of the best parcels of Château de Carles (10 ha out of the 20 ha of the estate), certainly the finest and most ambitious wine of Fronsac, making since 2000 equal game with the best classified growths of the slopes of Saint-Émilion.

Galloni (Vinous) : 88-91/100 « Sleeper. The 2017 Haut-Carles is wonderfully deep and fleshy. Deep, fleshy and racy, Haut-Carles is a sumptuous Fronsac to enjoy over the next handful of years. As always, Haut-Carles is a dense, flamboyant wine. »

Mr. Durantou, a perfectionist and proud owner of L'Église-Clinet in Pomerol, acquired in 2008 his second château, 4.5 ha of vines in Côtes de Castillon, called Montlandrie. Devoting all his efforts and know-how to this, with the desire to always produce a wine overflowing with a crisp and juicy fruitiness, Mr. Durantou immediately placed Montlandrie among the very best wines of Castillon.

beau potentiel, belle finale. Grande réussite. »
    Galloni (Vinous) :
88-91/100 « Pliant, supple and inviting, the 2017 has much to offer. I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later, while the fruit retains its vibrancy. »
    Martin (Vinous) :
91-92/100 « The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, dark fruit but fresh and lively, very precise with a welcome dash of black pepper towards the graphite-tinged finish. Denis Durantou described this as one of his favorite wines of 2017 and I can understand why. »

Mr Derenoncourt, Bordeaux's most sought-after consultant, is also a producer. Obviously, he (with his wife) applies in his vineyards the methods that have made his success: respect for the terroir and biotope, subtle vinification and maturation, wines of great aromatic precision.

Bettane & Desseauve : 15,5/20 « Fruit tendre et mûr, allonge suave, fraîcheur délicate. »
Martin (Vinous) : 89-91/100 « The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, soft and plush with voluminous, black and blue fruit finish with chalk and graphite notes on the aftertaste. »

Mr. Durantou (Église-Clinet) produces only 1200 cases per year of his remarkable Lalande de Pomerol Les Cruzelles, much higher than Pomerol of equivalent price.

Galloni (Vinous) : 90-93/100 « The 2017 Les Cruzelles is another fabulous Lalande de Pomerol from Denis Durantou. Gravel, smoke, cured meats, blueberry jam and incense give the Cruzelles much of its dark, brooding personality. »
Martin (Vinous) : 90-92/100 « The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. This is very nicely focused with crisp acidity, saline and persistent on the finish. Excellent – this is as good a Lalande de Pomerol as you will find in 2017. »

Begun in 2003, the Clos Louie adventure is a textbook case: doll vineyard (2.3 ha) on a beautiful clayey-limestone soil of Castillon, careful cultivation in biodynamics, double manual sorting during the harvest, vinification with little intervention, gentle maturing in half-masses of 500 litres. Coming from very very old vines (150 years old) with a majority of Merlot and Malbec, Clos Louie is a true artist's wine made by a passionate couple.

A family property since the 1950s, the arrival of a new generation has awakened this 32-hectare cru bourgeois in Cussac-Fort-Médoc, between Saint-Julien and Margaux. Certainly Du Retout will make a name for itself in the years to come.

Regardless of its production in the Margaux appellation, Mille Roses also produces an Haut-Médoc on 4 parcels, 5.5 ha, around the Château. 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot giving a dashing, accessible and silky wine, finely wooded (25% new oak). And of course, driven organically since 2010.
