Newsletters Futures 2017

Under the name « gems », we refer to unsung producers who make admirable wines due to their excellent vineyards and their own talent.

These wines are always produced in very small amounts, in vineyards maintained as gardens by gifted and meticulous wine-growers. Even if they do not make the headlines of magazines, they highly deserve to be discovered and tasted for their exemplary quality.

Full-bodied, fat and with a characteristic vanilla woody taste, the dry white wine of Lynch-Bages plays the charm and fabric card. Less than 2000 cases produced each year, far insufficient for global success.

Longueur normale. »
Galloni (Vinous) : 87-88/100 « The 2018 Lynch-Bages Blanc is a pleasant, easygoing white to drink young, while the citrus and floral notes remain vibrant. »

Property of 6 ha in Côtes de Castillon acquired in 2011 by the oenologist M. Thienpont (Puyguéraud, Pavie-Macquin, Larcis-Ducasse, Berliquet, etc.). After 5 years of restructuring, Mr. Thienpont is finally proud of his wine and offers it for the first time in 2016. Even if Merlot is dominant (92%), Alcée stands out from its neighbours by its emphasis on finesse, minerality and distinction. A wine in length and not in width!

Galloni (Vinous) : 87-89/100 « The 2018 Alcée is powerful and dense in the glass, with huge fruit to match its exuberant personality. Chocolate, spice, new leather, menthol and spice add nuance to the super-ripe dark fruit. This is an especially weighty, concentrated vintage for Alcée. »

A 4 ha plot selection from Château Rigaud, La Mauriane is not yet another luxurious cuvée on the right bank but a wine built on fine grain tannins where the brilliance and precision of the fruit prevail.

Bravo ! Fabuleux Outsider ! »

Mr. Durantou (Église-Clinet) produces only 1200 cases per year of his remarkable Lalande de Pomerol Les Cruzelles, much higher than Pomerol of equivalent price.

Galloni (Vinous) : 90-93/100 « The 2018 Les Cruzelles emerges from older vines Denis Durantou's Lalande De Pomerol property. Clay/gravelly soils in this parcels give the Cruzelles a darker fruit profile and greater breadth as well as more tannic clout than its sibling. This is an especially powerful, structured expression of Lalande de Pomerol, and it works beautifully. »

Mr Derenoncourt, Bordeaux's most sought-after consultant, is also a producer. Obviously, he (with his wife) applies in his vineyards the methods that have made his success: respect for the terroir and biotope, subtle vinification and maturation, wines of great aromatic precision.

Belle longueur. »
Galloni (Vinous) : 90-92/100 « The 2018 Domaine de l'A is powerful, dense and full of personality. Rich and ample on the palate, the 2018 packs a serious kick of intensity in all of its dimensions. As for the wine, it is fabulous. Domaine de l'A is a rare Côtes de Castillon that needs bottle age to be at its best. There is plenty to look forward to, that much is clear. »

Begun in 2003, the Clos Louie adventure is a textbook case: doll vineyard (2.3 ha) on a beautiful clayey-limestone soil of Castillon, careful cultivation in biodynamics, double manual sorting during the harvest, vinification with little intervention, gentle maturing in half-masses of 500 litres. Coming from very very old vines (150 years old) with a majority of Merlot and Malbec, Clos Louie is a true artist's wine made by a passionate couple.

Oenologist by training, Xavier Copel undertook in 1996 to enhance the great terroirs of the South-West by creating the "Primo Palatum" brand, with the help of renowned producers in each appellation such as Château Le Cèdre (Cahors), Domaine de Cauhapé (Jurançon), etc. After 12 vintages, he decided to put an end to this adventure, which was acclaimed on all sides.

Since 2016, it has been back under its own brand "Xavier Copel" with a selection extended to wines from Bordeaux and Spain. And always the same qualitative ambition: partnership with only one winegrower per appellation, selection of parcels of old vines in native grape varieties, sweet vinification, "grand cru" ageing in Burgundy barrels.

Here there is no blockbuster, but wines of superior elegance, representative of their appellation, with particular attention to aromatic purity and tannic finesse. Already included in the Bettane&Desseauve guide "carefully selected, elegant, charming wines, whose only defect may be the small quantity produced".

Grape varieties: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Verdot, 10% Merlot.

Resulting from a strict selection of plots, on fine gravel mixed with black sand and a clayey-gravelly subsoil.

A family property since the 1950s, the arrival of a new generation has awakened this 32-hectare cru bourgeois in Cussac-Fort-Médoc, between Saint-Julien and Margaux. Certainly Du Retout will make a name for itself in the years to come.

Longueur normale. »
Galloni (Vinous) : 88-90/100 « The 2018 Du Retout is a delicious Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois from a property located between Margaux and Saint-Julien. Expressive savory notes from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot add aromatic nuance to a core of plush, dark fruit. This pliant, juicy Haut-Médoc has a lot to offer. Most importantly, it is absolutely delicious. »

Regardless of its production in the Margaux appellation, Mille Roses also produces an Haut-Médoc on 4 parcels, 5.5 ha, around the Château. 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot giving a dashing, accessible and silky wine, finely wooded (25% new oak). And of course, driven organically since 2010.

Beautiful initiative of Belle-Vue (Haut-Médoc), which since 2016 has been making an original cuvée, 100% petit verdot, with its oldest vines (77 years and over) of this wonderful fruity and late variety (hence its name), adapted to global warming.
