Newsletters Futures 2017

In the category « Long keeping », we gather all the wines of the vintage 2017 that will have, according to us, an ageing potential of at least 20 years (even if they will reach their peak before). This category is thus intended for the (very) patient ones with a great cellar, or for those who will have something to celebrate in 20 years (or more).

The ability to age well is the preserve of the finest wines, but more affordable wines can also have a great ageing potential due to their excellent vineyards, the grapes varieties used or to the winemaker’s will. The ageing varies as well depending on the temperature of the cellar (the colder the cellar is, the slower the wine will age) and the bottle’s size (wines in large containers like magnums will age slower and longer than wines in bottles).

Bought in 2017 by the reinsurer SCOR, a page is turned in Troplong-Mondot, a wonderful terroir in Saint-Émilion. Until 2016 inclusive, these are the richest and most generous wines of the appellation, produced by Christine Valette and her husband, under the aegis of Michel Rolland.

Galloni (Vinous) : 94-97/100 « The 2018 Troplong Mondot is a remarkable wine. All the elements fall into place in a stunning, aromatically intense Troplong Mondot that is full of character. There is a level of precision and vibrancy in the 2018 that is simply breathtaking. »

Advised by Mr. Derenoncourt, Clos Fourtet regularly and unobtrusively demonstrates that the upper part of the Saint-Émilion plateau can produce wines as great as the Ausone or Pavie hillsides. Sobriety, depth, finesse and intensity are exemplary.

Dupont (Le Point) : 17/20 « Tanins fins, denses, bonne matière, velouté, bonne harmonie, végétal frais, laurier, long, harmonieux. »
Galloni (Vinous) : 94-97/100 « One of the wines of the vintage, the 2018 Clos Fourtet is positively stunning. In the glass, the 2018 sizzles with tension and energy. A whole range of floral, mineral and red berry notes develop, but it is the wine's exceptional sense of harmony that leaves the deepest impression. Don't miss it. »

Become a first grand cru classé in 2012, just reward for 20 years of effort by Mr. Neipperg (Canon-La Gaffelière, Clos de l'Oratoire) on this small vineyard of 4.5 ha adjoining Troplong-Mondot. A very large Saint-Émilion, fleshy, intense and penetrating, but with a confidential production.

Grand potentiel. »
Dupont (Le Point) : 16,5-17/20 « Fruité très pur, bonne matière, charnu, tanins fins, serrés, très sapides, finale nette. »
Galloni (Vinous) : 94-97/100 « The 2018 La Mondotte is one of the highlights in this vintage. A rich, extravagant Saint-Émilion, La Mondotte retains a surprising amount of nuance and detail for a wine of its size. Crème de cassis, lavender, mint, spice and licorice all run through this sumptuous, full-throttle wine. Bright saline notes add energy and vibrancy. Simply put, the 2018 is stunning. »

Without artifice, Figeac wines display an unparalleled naturalness, freshness and distinction. For example, with the finesse and superlative silkiness of the 2008 sound tannins, already appreciable.

Galloni (Vinous) : 96-99/100 « The 2018 Figeac is simply magnificent. A regal, soaring wine with tremendous vertical lift and nuance, the 2018 is marvelously complete from the very first taste. Medium in body and refined, the 2018 is vibrant, with fine tannins and, frankly, quite a bit more freshness than I expected to see given the very dry, sunny summer. The 2018 Figeac is brilliant. »

Neither quite Saint-Émilion nor really Pomerol, the inimitable Cheval Blanc occupies a special place on the right bank, on the famous gravelly soil of the Figeac plateau.

Galloni (Vinous) : 97-100/100 « The 2018 Cheval Blanc is dazzling. Creamy, supple and inviting, the 2018 is endowed with phenomenal balance. The tannins and overall structure are imposing, and yet the richness of the fruit and perfect ripeness of the tannin really stand out. I am struck by how much freshness and energy the 2018 has. A precise counterpoint of fruit richness and finesse makes for a truly unforgettable Cheval Blanc. »

In 2004, Jean-Michel Chartron gave a new impetus to his estate, with the chance to have an extraordinary land heritage (the Clos des Chevaliers is the best part of the Chevalier-Montrachet, itself considered the best grand cru in Puligny after Montrachet). Mineral, nervous, powerful and long, its wines are among the greatest in Puligny. Rated two stars in the Revue du Vin de France guide.

    Appointment

Jean-Michel Chartron was doubly elected "Winegrower of the Year": in the magazine "Bourgogne Aujourd'hui" in March 2018 and in the Hachette guide in September 2018.

Jean-Michel Chartron "The fruit was in extraordinarily good health, and the weather was perfect, allowing each winemaker to harvest at the optimum moment. The mood was serene across the whole wine region, producers enjoying this magnificent vintage that combined quality and quantity. Many think this will be one of the best vintages in many years. In 2018, the aromatic complexity of the white wines is incredible. They are explosive on the nose, with an amazing diversity that reflects each terroir. The wines have a certain crispness and good minerality. In the mouth, they are rounded and generous, balanced with a nice tension."

Oenologist by training, Xavier Copel undertook in 1996 to enhance the great terroirs of the South-West by creating the "Primo Palatum" brand, with the help of renowned producers in each appellation such as Château Le Cèdre (Cahors), Domaine de Cauhapé (Jurançon), etc. After 12 vintages, he decided to put an end to this adventure, which was acclaimed on all sides.

Since 2016, it has been back under its own brand "Xavier Copel" with a selection extended to wines from Bordeaux and Spain. And always the same qualitative ambition: partnership with only one winegrower per appellation, selection of parcels of old vines in native grape varieties, sweet vinification, "grand cru" ageing in Burgundy barrels.

Here there is no blockbuster, but wines of superior elegance, representative of their appellation, with particular attention to aromatic purity and tannic finesse. Already included in the Bettane&Desseauve guide "carefully selected, elegant, charming wines, whose only defect may be the small quantity produced".

    Grape variety: 100% malbec

Unique plot, old malbec vines planted on a soil of siderolithic limestone near Cahors. Certified organic viticulture.

Amazing story as that of Dominio de Pingus. Created in 1995 by Peter Sisseck, a Danish (!), this estate a few kilometres from Vega Sicilia has become a cult in less than 15 years.

Pingus is the great wine, made from the 4 ha of the estate, 100% tempranillo aged 70 years, biodynamic since 2000. 450 cases per year (an average yield of 10hl/ha, not counting small vintages, such as the 2002, totally downgraded in Flor de Pingus).
