Newsletters Futures 2017

For each vintage and each appellation, there are always wines that distinguished themselves by being cheaper than others with the same quality level, or by being far better than others in the same range of prices.

These “best values for money” of the current vintage are highlighted in this category.

Historical bourgeois cru of Saint-Estephe since in the same family since 1678! With a grape variety dominated by Merlot (60%) and the arrival of Hubert de Boüard (Angelus) as a consultant from 2016, Tour des Termes has a velvety and supple texture that gives it its charm.

Galloni (Vinous) : 88-90/100 « The 2018 Tour de Termes is laced with inky crème de cassis, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice notes. Medium in body and also quite racy, Tour de Termes is one the juicier, fruitier wines readers will find in Saint-Estèphe. »

On the terroir of Pez, known to be the best in St-Estèphe (excluding classified growths), the Cazes family uses the same recipes here as those that made Lynch-Bages so successful: generous fruit and opulent texture. Ormes de Pez is an'almost' Lynch-Bages but at a quarter of the price!

Bonne longueur. »
Galloni (Vinous) : 89-91/100 « The 2018 Ormes de Pez is dark, plush and enveloping. Unctuous and intense in its ripeness, Ormes de Pez is decidedly opulent in 2018. The 14.6% alcohol is evident, and yet the wine shows terrific balance, as well as quite a bit of promise. »

Real artisan Pomerol, organically grown since 2009, velvety and energetic tannins (gravelly soil) and a beautiful freshness on the finish.

Attention: great wine! Without any noise, Feytit-Clinet is close to the biggest names in Pomerol. Only the price remains in decline.

Longueur normale. »
Galloni (Vinous) : 92-95/100 « Proprietor Jérémy Chasseuil turned out another gorgeous wine at Feytit-Clinet. Although the 2018 does not have the explosive energy of some past vintages, in exchange it will drink well with minimal cellaring. As always, Feytit-Clinet is one of the most virile, potent wines of Pomerol and all of Bordeaux, for that matter. »

A small vineyard of 8 ha of old vines (70% Merlot), now owned by Clos Fourtet. Superb wine, balanced and fruity and tasty, for a very modest price, which rightly became a grand cru classé in 2012. For the Revue du Vin de France as for us : "The best quality/price ratio in Saint-Émilion".

Galloni (Vinous) : 89-92/100 « The 2018 Cote de Baleau is a very pretty, understated wine built on precision and nuance. Sweet floral and spice notes add character to a nuanced, pleasant Saint-Émilion that will drink well pretty much on release. This is very nicely done. The purity of the flavors is striking. »

The amateur looking for fine and easily digestible classified great wines should be interested in Fonroque. In organic cultivation since 2006 and biodynamic cultivation since 2008, Fonroque offers an original vision of the terroir of the Saint-Émilion plateau, made of freshness, elegance, controlled and melting power. Alain Moueix, its owner, clearly shows the way forward for the future of the great wines of Bordeaux, all shores combined.

In 2004, Jean-Michel Chartron gave a new impetus to his estate, with the chance to have an extraordinary land heritage (the Clos des Chevaliers is the best part of the Chevalier-Montrachet, itself considered the best grand cru in Puligny after Montrachet). Mineral, nervous, powerful and long, its wines are among the greatest in Puligny. Rated two stars in the Revue du Vin de France guide.

    Appointment

Jean-Michel Chartron was doubly elected "Winegrower of the Year": in the magazine "Bourgogne Aujourd'hui" in March 2018 and in the Hachette guide in September 2018.

Jean-Michel Chartron "The fruit was in extraordinarily good health, and the weather was perfect, allowing each winemaker to harvest at the optimum moment. The mood was serene across the whole wine region, producers enjoying this magnificent vintage that combined quality and quantity. Many think this will be one of the best vintages in many years. In 2018, the aromatic complexity of the white wines is incredible. They are explosive on the nose, with an amazing diversity that reflects each terroir. The wines have a certain crispness and good minerality. In the mouth, they are rounded and generous, balanced with a nice tension."
