Certified organic since 2015 and with a vineyard entirely biodynamic, Château de La Dauphine wishes, beyond its 350 years of history, to set an example of modern viticulture that is concerned about environmental issues.

Revue du Vin de France :
    Dupont (Le Point) :
Quarin : 87/100 « Bouche au corps tendre, fruitée, agréable »
Galloni (Vinous) : 91-93/100 « A wine of superb richness and volume, the 2019 is shaping up to be a real beauty. The more extroverted side of Fronsac comes through nicely here. »
Martin (Vinous) : 92-94/100 « The 2019 de la Dauphine has a superb nose with pure blackberry, boysenberry and crushed stone aromas, hints of iris and violet emerging with time. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, grainy tannins, fine depth and an unerring sense of symmetry on the finish. »

Begun in 2003, the Clos Louie adventure is a textbook case: doll vineyard (2.3 ha) on a beautiful clayey-limestone soil of Castillon, careful cultivation in biodynamics, double manual sorting during the harvest, vinification with little intervention, gentle maturing in half-masses of 500 litres. Louison et Léopoldine is the other wine from Clos Louie, made from the youngest vines (50 years old all the same), giving pride of place to Cabernet-Franc for a brilliant fruity taste and the promise of a quick-lasting gourmet pleasure.

With 12 hectares cultivated in biodynamic farming, certified since the 2007 vintage, Clos Puy-Arnaud is one of the great Côtes de Castillon wines that have nothing to envy to neighbouring Saint-Émilion.

"Grand Vin", the uncompromising cuvée that has made the estate's reputation, authentic, straight and deep, classic, spicy and cut out for keeping.

    Bettane & Desseauve :
Revue du Vin de France :
    Dupont (Le Point) :
Galloni (Vinous) : 92-94/100 « The 2019 Clos Puy Arnaud is dazzling. Rich, inky and wonderfully deep, the 2019 has so much to offer. I can't remember a recent Clos Puy Arnaud with this much density and sheer textural intensity. Inky dark fruit, crème de cassis, violets and licorice all build as this sumptuous, exotically rich Castillon Côtes De Bordeaux shows off its personality. What a wine! »
Martin (Vinous) : 85-87/100 « The 2019 Puy Arnaud has a lovely ripe nose with mulberry and raspberry preserve, generous and well defined. [...] Whilst the aromatics are promising, the palate lacks structure and grip and drifts towards the finish. »

Totally surrounded by classified growths, La Gurgue enjoys a privileged terroir, and the attentive care of Mrs Villars (also owner of Ferrière, classified growth of Margaux, and Haut-Bages-Libéral, classified growth of Pauillac), distinguished in the Top 25 of the best producers of the Bettane&Desseauve 2020 guide. Certainly the best quality/price/pleasure ratio in the appellation.

Galloni (Vinous) : 90-93/100 « The 2019 La Gurgue is a beautiful wine. Dark red cherry, plum, rose petal, pomegranate, mocha and blood orange are some of the many notes that flesh out in this supple, racy Margaux. Deep and pliant, the 2019 has a lot to offer. Readers will find an especially fleshy, supple style. »

In organic conversion from 2013, Durfort-Vivens was one of the very first classified growths in the Médoc to claim and display organic certification from 2016. M. Bettane is one of its most fervent defenders: "the quality/price ratio remains absolutely unique at this level of quality of terroir and work", noting 17.5-18/20 on 2015 "great brilliant length, ultra racy volume, energy".

Revue du Vin de France :
Galloni (Vinous) : 92-94/100 « The 2019 Durfort-Vivens is a polished, sophisticated wine. Inky dark fruit, grilled herbs, lavender, pine and spice notes and a range of strong savory Cabernet inflections are some of the signatures. Overall, the 2019 is a wine built more on energy and persistence rather than on overt textural depth, as was the case in the 2018. Today, the 2019 feels a bit light. It will be interesting to see if it fills out more during élevage. »
Dupont (Le Point) : 17/20 « Violette, dense, sérieux, tanins fins, très cabernet. »

Since 2010, Claire Villars (also in Ferrière and La Gurgue), puts back in the saddle Haut-Bages Liberal. With a qualitative terroir (contiguous to Latour), this Classified Growth in the process of organic conversion has become, for a reasonable price, Pauillac's bargain.

Galloni (Vinous) : 92-95/100 « The 2019 Haut-Bages Libéral is plush and radiant from the very first taste. Inky red fruit, new leather, cedar, mint and sweet pipe tobacco envelop the palate. Readers will find a bold, sumptuous Pauillac with soft contours, generous fruit and tons of sheer appeal. »

Very rare are the crus of the north of the Médoc to have launched out for the moment in the organic conversion because of a stronger hygrometry than everywhere else in the Gironde. De Côme, a Petit Cru Bourgeois (superior) of 7 ha, has become after 7 years of efforts (and the loss of 2/3 of the 2018 harvest) the first growth of Saint-Estèphe certified organic, in a supple, fine and silky version of the appellation.

Dupont (Le Point) : 15/20 « Nez épicé, poivré, caramel brun, bouche juteuse, serrée, tanins croquants, bonne longueur, pur. »
Martin (Vinous) : 86-88/100 « The 2019 de Côme has quite a tight blackberry and soy tinged nose that doesn't quite match my expectations. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, quite saline in the mouth but it needs more depth and complexity on the finish. »

Dupont (Le Point) : 17/20 « Cerise, charnu, juteux, bonne matière, tanins délicats, élevage équilibré. »
Martin (Vinous) : 90-92/100 « The palate is smooth and silky on the entry, the acidity well judged with plush dark cherries and blackcurrant laced with white pepper and 5-spice on the finish. Excellent. »

The amateur looking for fine and easily digestible classified great wines should be interested in Fonroque. In organic cultivation since 2006 and biodynamic cultivation since 2008, Fonroque offers an original vision of the terroir of the Saint-Émilion plateau, made of freshness, elegance, controlled and melting power. Alain Moueix, its owner, clearly shows the way forward for the future of the great wines of Bordeaux, all shores combined.

Martin (Vinous) : 90-92/100 « The 2019 Fonroque has a ripe, almost exotic bouquet with decadent red fruit, a little excessive perhaps. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins, rounded and velvety in texture, one of the headiest Saint-Émilion crus that I have tasted - completely different to Alain Moueix's Pomerol cru Château Mazeyres. »

An oenologist by training, Ms. Papon-Nouvel owns two tiny properties at the bottom of Saint-Émilion near Canon-La Gaffelière: Petit Gravet Aîné (2.4 ha) and Clos Saint-Julien (1.3 ha), where the vines are mainly old cabernets francs. From the vine to the cellar, she manages all the stages in the production of her wines on her own and, whatever the vintage, her talent as an instinctive winemaker gives wines of natural elegance and exemplary sweetness.

    Bettane & Desseauve : 94/100
Revue du Vin de France :
    Dupont (Le Point) :
Galloni (Vinous) : 92-94/100 « Even with all of its intensity and pure power, the 2019 retains terrific aromatic brilliance. Then again, that is the magic of Cabernet Franc in this 2.4-hectare vineyard. Petit Gravet Aîné shows the ripeness of the year a bit more than its sibling Clos Saint-Julien, but it has an allure all of its own. »
Martin (Vinous) : 85-87/100 « The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins. A bit disjointed compared to its peers with a dry and atypically austere finish that feels green around the edges. Perplexing. »

Become a first grand cru classé in 2012, just reward for 20 years of effort by Mr. Neipperg (Canon-La Gaffelière, Clos de l'Oratoire) on this small vineyard of 4.5 ha adjoining Troplong-Mondot. A very large Saint-Émilion, fleshy, intense and penetrating, but with a confidential production.

Dupont (Le Point) : 16.5/20 « Cerise, mûre, bouche charnue, juteuse, poivrée, élevage fin, long élégant. »
Galloni (Vinous) : 94-96/100 « Liquified rocks, gravel, blackberry jam, smoke, licorice and dried flowers are some of the many aromas and flavors that infuse La Mondotte with tremendous character. Brooding and potent, the 2019 possesses dazzling richness married to structure. It is a wine of tremendous breeding. »
Martin (Vinous) : 93-95/100 « The palate is medium-bodied with fine and very lithe tannins that imbue this La Mondotte with a creamy texture. This is another Saint-Émilion without a hair out of place, very sensual and for want of a better word, almost nubile. The 70% new oak is an assiduous decision and allows the terroir to come through on the finish. Excellent. »
