Newsletters Futures 2019

In the "Top of the Top" category, we group together the podium (i.e. the dozen or so most exciting wines with the best scores of the vintage) of what we consider to be the most reliable tasters and which we regularly report on:

- Michel Bettane, bettanedesseauve.com
- Jacques Dupont, Le Point
- La Revue du Vin de France
- Jean-Marc Quarin (quarin.com)
- Antonio Galloni and Neal Martin (vinous.com)

You will see in good place the most prestigious domains, therefore the most expensive, but also several challengers who create the surprise...

The white wine of Smith Haut Lafitte has built up a solid reputation over the last 10 years, even if it is not a grand cru classé (but Haut-Brion blanc and Pape-Clément blanc are not either). A happy marriage of wood and fruit, it always delivers a beautiful aromatic complexity, from lime blossom to citrus, and a lively, rich and fine structure. 2017 was rated 19/20 by the Revue du Vin de France "one of the most complete and accomplished wines ever tasted. The depth, complexity of flavor and length are truly impressive. It will go very far".

    Bettane & Desseauve : 95-96/100
Bravo ! »
Galloni (Vinous) : 92-94/100 « Orchard fruit, mint, white flowers, lemon confit and white pepper confer briskness to a white that nicely balances the natural richness of the year with freshness that comes from picking on the early side. »
Martin (Vinous) : 94-96/100 « It is not the most complex white Smith Haut Lafitte that I have tasted, yet it is full of tension with subtle spicy notes of ginger and lemongrass that enliven the persistent finish. There is a brightness and sophistication to this wine that is very persuasive. Superb. »

In the commune of Preignac, Suduiraut offers a wine that reflects its geographical position: halfway between Sauternes and Barsac. The latest vintages are dazzling in terms of contained power and aromatic distinction. Double coup for the 2016 and 2017 vintages in the Revue du Vin de France, respectively rated 19/20 "masterful" and 19.5/20 "remarkable".

    Bettane & Desseauve : 93-94/100
Galloni (Vinous) : 94-96/100 « What I like most about Suduiraut is how it delivers superb flavor intensity and yet remains light on its feet. The 2019 is a gorgeous and totally compelling wine. »
Martin (Vinous) : 95-97/100 « A powerful and intense Sauternes in the making with layers of honey, ginger and quince. You could almost describe the texture as "gloopy"! This is a superb Suduiraut with long-term potential. »

Bought out in 2017 by the reinsurer SCOR, a page is turned in Troplong-Mondot, a formidable terroir in Saint-Emilion. Up to and including 2016, these are the richest in extract and most generous wines of the appellation, made by Christine Valette and her husband, under the aegis of Michel Rolland.

A radical break in style from the 2017 vintage: armed with the power of its terroir, the Château now aims, under the leadership of Aymeric de Gironde (former director of Cos d'Estournel), to produce more harmonious wines, combining elegant precision with their natural aromatic richness.

Galloni (Vinous) : 96-98/100 « The 2019 Troplong Mondot is sensational. Rich, vibrant and explosive, the 2019 pulses with energy. Black cherry, violet plum, licorice, lavender and dark spice build in a statuesque Saint-Émilion endowed with tremendous energy and pure power. Troplong Mondot is not as obvious a wine as it was a few years ago, but its grandeur - and more importantly, the grandeur of this site - are evident. »
Martin (Vinous) : 95-97/100 « Its gentle personality belies the backbone of this Troplong, with touches of white pepper and tobacco toward the cerebral finish. It is a wonderful Saint-Émilion from Aymeric de Gironde and his team, more approachable than the 2018, to be frank, just a wine you are going to want to drink. »

In 2004, Jean-Michel Chartron gave a new impetus to the family estate, with the chance to have an extraordinary land heritage (the Clos des Chevaliers is the best part of the Chevalier-Montrachet, itself considered the best grand cru in Puligny after Montrachet). Mineral, nervous, powerful and long, its wines are among the greatest in Puligny. Rated one star in the 2021 Revue du Vin de France guide.

La Pousse d'Or was the flagship estate of the Côte de Beaune from the 1960s until the death of Mr. Gérard Potel in 1996. After a difficult recovery, La Pousse d'Or regains its letters of nobility since 2009 by producing generous, deep and complex wines, from very ripe harvests. The estate expanded in 2008 with the judicious acquisition of very beautiful plots of land in Chambolle-Musigny (formerly the Moine-Hudelot estate) and Morey-Saint-Denis (formerly the Louis Rémy estate).

Since 1994, Michel Tardieu has been selecting and growing wines from very old vines and from the best terroirs of each appellation. Promoted two stars in the 2021 Revue du Vin de France guide.

A new cuvée created in 2017, a Côte-Rôtie Vieilles Vignes from the heart of the hillside on the major terroirs of the Côte Brune. Phenomenal concentration, energetic tannin, a compact but refined wine, to wait at least 10 years before considering tasting.
