Grand-Puy-Lacoste is the finest of Pauillac's 5th classified growths, held with competence and care by Mr. François-Xavier Borie and his children. The latest vintages show even greater aromatic precision and tannin nobility.

    In Tasting Offer this season.

    Galloni : 92-94,5/100
« The 2022 Grand-Puy Lacoste is a very pretty wine. There's good complexity and depth, but it is the radiance of the year that is front and center. »
Martin : 96-98/100 « The 2022 Grand Puy Lacoste is a little more precocity and sensuality compared to other vintages, not cut from the same "classical" cloth as, say, the 2019 or 2020. There is a peacock's tail of mineral-rich, quite peppery black fruit on the finish, completing a Pauillac endowed with huge potential. »

As in music, variation consists in making changes to a "theme". Grand-Puy-Lacoste has thus chosen, for his Grand Vin like for his second wine Lacoste Borie, to gather in the same case the variation of the sizes of bottles, allowing to discover the evolution of the wine in time through these three formats (bottle, magnum and double-magnum).

The "Variation Case" contains 1 Double-Magnum, 2 Magnums and 4 Bottles, the equivalent of 12 bottles.

Known for producing one of the firmest and tightest (even robust) Pauillacs available, Duhart-Milon has since 2010 refined its style to gradually approach that of Lafite (same owner and same team). New direction and progress amply confirmed in 2015 and 2016, with an unprecedented charm and fatness. Given the quality of its terroir (the only 4th Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac), Duhart-Milon has certainly not finished its progression.

    See the technical sheet

    Galloni : 92-94/100
« The 2022 Duhart-Milon is racy and explosive right out of the gate. I imagine the 2022 will require at least a fem years in bottle to be at its best, but it is pretty showy today. »

Property Rothschild (Mouton), with d'Armailhac. Apart from the terroir, the main difference between the two crus is the increased proportion of Merlot in Clerc-Milon (35% as opposed to 20%), giving it additional smoothness and richness. Since 2007 Clerc-Milon has benefited from its own vat room, a new winery and a dedicated team of 21 people so that Clerc-Milon can compete qualitatively with Lynch-Bages and Pontet-Canet.

Galloni : 91-93/100 « The 2022 Clerc Milon is plump, juicy and vibrant, with terrific energy and tons of class. A decidedly flamboyant edition of Clerc Milon. »

Contiguous to Mouton-Rothschild, Pontet-Canet is in good vintages the very type of great Pauillac, straight and racy. The first of the Grands Crus Classés to be certified "organic" (in 2010), Pontet-Canet has been at the top of the Médoc since 2000.

Galloni : 95-97/100 « The 2022 Pontet-Canet is a surprising wine. I very much admire the precision and vibrancy here. Unforgettable. »
Martin : 94-96/100 « The palate has a lovely chalky texture on the entry, and a silver bead of acidity. Perhaps, more complexity than the aromatics suggest at the moment. Fine balance, moderate grip, the mineralité  coming toward the final third, it fans out with gusto. »

Apart from the first great classified growths, no other Bordeaux wine is as world famous as Lynch-Bages. Its worldwide success comes as much from its opulent, full-bodied and robust style, from its unfailing regularity since 1975, and from its media promotion orchestrated by Jean-Michel Cazes. Lynch-Bages was the first wine sent into space (Discovery shuttle in 1985). It is even said that it is him who gave the taste of Bordeaux to the Americans!

Galloni : 95-97/100 « The 2022 Lynch-Bages shows all the classic Lynch layers, but dialed up to the maximum. Rich, deep and explosive, the 2022 packs tremendous punch. I expect the 2022 will need a decade to shed some of its tannin, but it is formidable, even in the early going. Impressive. »
Martin : 95-97/100 « The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, beautifully balanced, very harmonious yet there is an enormous backbone here that (again) is reminiscent of Mouton. It is going to be a Pauillac for the long haul. »

Bought in 1986 by the AXA group, initially under the leadership of Mr. Cazes (Lynch-Bages), Pichon-Longueville Baron regained its best form in the powerful and distinguished style of the great Pauillac. It must be said that a small half of its vines are located next to those of Latour, on a first growth terroir! For the Revue du Vin de France: "Pichon-Baron is at the top in the last vintages".

    Galloni : 96-98/100
« The 2022 Pichon Baron is marvelous. It continues a series of vintages that have been absolutely compelling. More than anything else, the 2022 impresses with its precision and magnificent balance. »
Martin : 96-98/100 « The palate is tensile right from the start. Taut and linear, fresh, quite saline with a nuanced touch of black pepper toward the finish. Real pedigree and sophistication here, this is a magnificent Pichon-Baron. »

Mr Rouzaud (Champagne Roederer) acquired it in 2007 and has since strengthened the technical team by adding the advice of Mr Boissenot. Pichon-Comtesse remains faithful to the style that has made it so successful, as dense, suave, charming, enchanting and above all endearing.

    Galloni : 96-99/100
« The 2022 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is magnificent. All the element are so well balanced. »
Martin : 96-98/100 « The 2022 Pichon-Comtesse de Lalande has a subtle bouquet, not understated but it unfurls in the glass (unlike others that explode). This is a very suave Pichon-Lalande that will age with style. »

Galloni : 92-94/100 « The 2022 Carruades de Lafite is a real showstopper. I don't remember tasting a Carruades quite like the 2022, a wine that combines the richness of the year with tons of supporting structure. »

Mouton-Rothschild's second wine, which appeared in 1993, has since made its place among its peers (Carruades de Lafite, Forts de Latour, Pavillon Rouge) by offering each vintage a great Pauillac, full, fleshy, muscular, barely less deep and full-bodied than its famous big brother but with the same cassis finish. Petit Mouton has grown up!

Jolie longueur. »

Mouton-Rothschild's upgrade in 1973 from second to first grand cru classé was as legitimate as it was deserved in view of the quality of its terroir, a plateau of 90 hectares of deep gravel to the north of Pauillac, with Lafite-Rothschild as a neighbor. Despite this promotion, and even though it regularly tops the rankings in tastings, Mouton-Rothschild remains to this day the least expensive of the Médoc's premier crus classés. Its powerful, full-bodied style and its ability to age well have led Mr. Bettane to write "perhaps the most formally perfect wine in the Médoc...".

Quarin : 100/100 « Nez intense, fin, fruité, pur, complexe. »
    Galloni : 96-98/100 « The 2022 Mouton Rothschild is a powerhouse. Inky, deep and explosive, the 2022 is a real head-turner. In a word : magnificent. »
Martin : 96-98/100 « Powerful, almost burly, it is perhaps how the 1956 tasted in its youth. A Mouton-Rothschild determined to make a statement and it certainly does that. »

Appointed cellar master in 1994, Mr. Chevallier focused on developing Lafite-Rothschild wines without losing any of the characteristic bouquet of blackcurrant, graphite and cedar. This objective was quickly achieved, placing Lafite at the top of the 1st classified growths (this was already the case in 1855), and revered as such by the Chinese market. The incredible qualities of Lafite's terroir make it a unique vintage and give Cabernet Sauvignon (more than 90% present each year) its most beautiful aromatic expressions.

Galloni : 96-98/100 « All of the Lafite signatures are present, but what impresses most about the 2022 is its poise, its stature. A modern-day classic. »
Martin : 96-98/100 « Compared to vintages a couple of decades ago, there is mid-palate weight, yet it retains classicism and transparency, while delivering quite a gentle but insistent grip on the finish. Perpetually the most deceptive of First Growth, one should not doubt its long-term potential. »

Previously settled on firm tannins that made them stark in their youth, Cos Labory's wines have since 2015 changed in style, becoming more pleasant and gaining in depth and refinement (its vineyard is adjacent to those of Lafite-Rothschild and Cos d'Estournel).

The Audoy family having sold its vineyard to the neighboring Cos d'Estournel at the beginning of 2023, a new era begins at Cos Labory.

The acquisition of Calon-Ségur in 2012 by a subsidiary of Crédit Mutuel (a French bank) heralds the great awakening of this famous terroir of gravel on limestone, in one piece and entirely surrounded by a wall (a unique fact in the Médoc). All of Bordeaux wants Calon-Ségur to be as fabulous as those of the middle of the last century after a 15-year investment plan.

After signing 43 vintages, from 1963 to 2005 inclusive, Mr. Charmolüe sold in 2006 to Mr. Bouygues. The change in ownership was accompanied by a change in style, moving towards less rigidity and more refinement. Montrose remains nevertheless a wine of great breed, resting on a powerful tannic architecture and reserved for the most patient amateurs.

Galloni : 96-98/100 « The 2022 Montrose is a brooding, powerful wine, as it often is. You will have to be exceptionally patient, as the 2022 is not likely to start drinking well until it is at least 15-20 years old. »

The very high quality of Cos d'Estournel's recent vintages is impressive, placing it undoubtedly among the first great classified growths of the Médoc. A single qualifier comes to mind when we think of Cos d'Estournel: monumental, for its wines as well as for its cellar.

Beware: great wine! Without any noise, Feytit-Clinet is getting closer to the biggest names in Pomerol, only the price remains in the background. More striking than its success in great vintages, it is its performance in smaller vintages that impresses:

Nénin is like Léoville-Las Cases (same owner): a great wine, straight, tight, with a lot of length and always excellent ageing potential. In great shape in the last vintages, as Bettane&Desseauve underlines "In constant progress for its structural and aromatic precision, it is now in the court of the greatest".

Galloni : 92-94/100 « The 2022 Nénin is terrific. Pliant, rich and creamy in the glass, the 2022 is a formidable example of the year. »

Garcin property (Barde-Haut, Poesia), 5.9 ha ideally located on the Pomerol plateau (between Clinet and L'Église-Clinet). Clos L'Église has been returning since 2011 to a more harmonious, melting and tasty version, similar to the style of La Conseillante.

Galloni : 94-96/100 « The 2022 Clos L'Église is a vibrant, sumptuous Pomerol that delivers the goods. »

Always of a high level for a reasonable price (in Pomerol), Gazin wines, moderately full-bodied and marked by truffles, are the archetype of the appellation.

Belle finale profonde. Une grande réussite. »

Always in search of the most accomplished maturity, Clinet offers each year the most voluptuous version of Pomerol.

Galloni : 94-96/100 « The 2022 Clinet is terrific. Vibrant, aromatic and beautifully sculpted, Clinet is also a terrific example of the energy quality-minded winemakers were able to achieve in 2022. This is stellar. »
