In music, a variation is an evolution based on a defined theme. Grand-Puy-Lacoste has thus chosen to combine 3 different formats in a single case, enabling the evolution of the wine to be followed over time. The "Caisse Variation" thus contains 1 Double-Magnum, 2 Magnums and 4 Bottles, equivalent in volume to 12 bottles.

Revue du Vin de France : 94-95/100 ♥ Coup de cœur « Aucun doute sur les origines pauillacaises de ce vin à la fois très distingué, droit et joliment enrobé. Un vin de grande classe, avec de l’éclat et une belle longueur. Un cru à mettre en cave en toute confiance. »
Bettane & Desseauve : 92/100 « Bon corps, belle texture, tannin complexe, il n’est pas complétement lisible notamment en raison d’un tannin encore un peu serré. Le style du terroir est bien présent. »
Le Point : 18/20 « Pivoine, agrumes, bouche légère, tendre, épicée, pimentée, tanins granuleux, croquants. Sérieux et aimable à la fois. »
Quarin : 96/100 « Nez très aromatique, pur, fin, subtil, précis et même rare. Il gagne des nuances complexes et profondes à l'agitation du verre. Finement pulpeux en entrée de bouche, avec de la classe dans le toucher, ce vin au déroulé subtil glisse sur la langue, parfume et conserve tout le long sa pulpe délicate. Il s'achève incrachable et profond, avec un retour de la violette dans la persistance. A ce stade, un look de Lafite. »
Galloni : 92-94/100 « The 2023 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is powerful, reticent and shy, revealing notes of black cherry, gravel, scorched earth and licorice. It's rich, ample and quite potent, marked by an intriguing mix of super-ripe Merlots and later-picked Cabernet. »
Martin : 93-95/100 « The 2023 Grand Puy Lacoste  has a classic "GPL" bouquet with blackberry, pencil box and light marine scents, obviously not as powerful as the previous vintage, yet in typical style, beautifully defined and focused. Just a touch of cracked black pepper surfaces with aeration. [...] There's an impressive linearity to this wine, and thus I suspect it will require less bottle-age compared to recent vintages. »

Quarin : 89/100 « Couleur sombre et intense. Nez très aromatique, fin, pur et fruité. Bouche tout en douceur tactile, offrant un gras fin jamais perçu ici à cet âge. Evolution juteuse et distinguée, sur un fond de réglisse. Ensemble chic et incrachable. »
Galloni : 88-90/100 « The 2023 Lacoste-Borie is a soft, supple second wine to drink on release, while its fruity, open-knit personality is on display. Succulent red cherry, spice and rose petal are nicely pushed forward. Lovely aromatics from the Franc linger. »
Martin : 88-90/100 « It bursts with red fruit on the nose—raspberry and wild strawberry—forward and quite generous in keeping with the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannins on the entry. Moderately deep, it tapers slightly toward the graphite-infused finish. This Deuxième Vin has an easy-drinking sensibility and should be broached over the next decade. »

Quarin : 93/100 « Nez intense, au fruité mûr et subtil. Minutieux en entrée de bouche, avec de suite un corps charnu, le vin évolue sur une texture caressante. Saveurs de fruits rouges, pointe d'orange confite. Il s'achève gras, sur une très bonne couverture tannique. C'est long, savoureux et très bon. »
Martin : 90-92/100 « The 2023 Fonroque has a tad more opulence on the nose compared to some of its peers, though it might have shaved away some of its definition in the process. The palate is medium-bodied with a little chewiness on the entry. Crisp toward the finish, with mainly red fruit laced with graphite and crushed stone, this Saint-Émilion improves as it goes on. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and hope that the aromatics gain a little more clarity. »

Revue du Vin de France : 92-94/100 « Ce vin se démarque clairement, que ce soit par la brillance de ses parfums comme par son délié de texture. Grâce à une plus grande proportion élevée en grands contenants, on sent une préservation du fruit qui le rend particulièrement attractif. Les 86 % de merlot offrent la gourmandise attendu d’un pomerol, tandis que les cabernets structurent la finale avec une maturité al dente. »

Martin : 91-93/100 « The 2023 Mazeyres has an elegant bouquet: scents of raspberry and wild strawberry, with veins of sous-bois and truffle emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with comparatively light tannins. This has a pinch of black pepper toward the finish-quite a cerebral Pomerol that will drink young, yet it has the substance to age. »

Revue du Vin de France : 93-94/100 «  Le cru bénéficie depuis ce millésime 2023 d’un tout nouvel outil de vinification. Peut-être a-t-il permis au vin de gagner en précision et en éclat, car ce 2023 n’en manque pas. Un vin aux notes de fruits très frais, doté d’une texture à la fois crémeuse, fine et veloutée, et d’une finale très éclatante. Une très belle réussite. »

Le cru sera sans doute l’un des plus recherchés dans ce millésime, aussi bien pour la grande qualité du vin proposé que pour ses nouvelles infrastructures exceptionnelles, dont un chai à barriques merveilleux, peut-être le plus beau jamais réalisé dans le monde. »

Quarin : 94/100 « Couleur rouge sombre. Nez très aromatique, fruité et plus fin qu'auparavant. Délicat en entrée de bouche, délicieux au milieu, avec un corps arrondi et du fond dans la saveur, le vin évolue long, séveux et surtout sans cesse juteux. Un joli déroulé.»
Galloni : 93-96/100 « The 2023 Cantenac Brown is concentrated, ample and generous right out of the gate. Blackberry, incense, new leather, tobacco, menthol and chocolate are all amplified to the maximum. As is often the case, Cantenac Brown is one of the more extroverted wines in Margaux. It's a style that works so well. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2023 needs time to shed some of its baby fat. »
Martin : 91-93/100 « The 2023 Cantenac Brown [...] is quite forward and more fruit-driven that expected. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded, very pliant tannins. It's impressively weighty and notably focused, though maybe not quite delivering the complexity and terroir expression on the finish as I found with the previous vintage. »

Galloni : 93-96/100 «  The 2023 La Gaffelière is a dense, powerful wine. [...] Usually, the aromatics are quite lifted, but this wine is rather dense. Nothing in particular stands out, as all the elements are impeccably balanced. This will need time to be at its best, but it shows promise. »
Martin : 94-96/100 « The 2023 La Gaffelière is very pure and floral on the nose, with black cherries intermingling with violet and iris flower scents. [...] The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and layers of lightly spiced black fruit. Cedar and graphite furnish the poised but persistent finish. This is another in a succession of impressive wines from this estate that just oozes sensuality. Superb. »

Martin : 87/100 «  Light pear and Golden Delicious scents emerge on the nose. It's quite pretty, if not the most complex white that you will find in the Médoc. The palate is balanced with white peach and Anjou pear and lightly spiced toward the finish. Drink it over the next two or three years. »

Martin : 89-91/100 « The 2023 Baron de Brane is well-defined on the nose with black cherries, wild mint and pencil box scents that are nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a grippy entry. There's backbone on this Deuxième Vin, quite feisty on the finish with decent length. »

It also signals a shift away from the richer (but equally successful) style favored here in the recent past, now moving toward an approach that favors more vibrancy. Dark red-toned fruit, blood orange, spice, mocha and cedar infuse the 2023 with notable freshness and verve. The new Léoville-Poyferré is quite the stunner. Tasted two times. »
Martin : 95-97/100 « This has an intense bouquet with black cherries and iodine, becoming more floral with aeration. The palate opens with a medium body and pliant tannins, fleshy and ripe, dovetailing into a dense and multi- tiered mid-palate. Typical Poyferré in style, blood orange and light graphite notes are embroidered into the ripe black fruit, and there is noticeable glycerol on the finish.[...] This is a contender for the best Saint-Julien in show. »

Martin : 90-92/100 « It is very perfumed on the nose that oddly brings me toward a warm vintage Burgundy! Very pure and floral, it gains composure as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Fresh and vibrant, this feels nicely focused with a citrus-fresh, graphite-tinged finish. Promising. »

Galloni : 94-97/100 « The 2023 Canon La Gaffelière is a powerful, dense wine. In recent years Canon La Gaffelière has been on the more perfumed side, but the 2023 moves in a direction of textural intensity. On the other hand, its balance is compelling. Dark red-toned fruit, pomegranate, spice, blood orange, mint and dried herbs open, but only with great reluctance. Tannins are present but also buried by the fruit. »
Martin : 92-94/100 « The 2023 Canon La Gaffelière sports an unashamedly floral bouquet with pressed iris and violet flowers that are integrated with the black fruit-incredibly precise. The palate is very well balanced with slightly chalky tannins. It fans out gently on the finish, yet it maintains a sense of verticality that you don't usually see in this Saint-Émilion. This is excellent, but a bit more Left Bank in style this year. »

Quarin : 91/100 « Jolie entrée en bouche minutieuse, se développant savoureuse au milieu, avec un toucher fin. Le vin glisse, caresse et s'achève sur une longueur normale, sans marquer le tannin. »
Galloni : 92-94/100 « The 2023 La Dominique is powerful, rich and deep, but without sacrificing aromatic presence. Hints of black cherry, spice, new leather and licorice unfurl in the glass, lending plenty of striking, even exotic, beauty. A successful vintage for this venerable Saint-Émilion. »
Martin : 92-94/100 « The 2023 La Dominique has a well-defined bouquet: a mixture of red and black fruit, undergrowth and wilted rose petals. This is a much more refined example from the estate. The palate is medium-bodied with mocha-tinged fruit and moderate depth, quite old school in style with a touch of leather on the finish. It's fine, but I would like just a tad more vivacity by the time of bottling. A second bottle toward the end of my tastings showed better than the first. »

Galloni : 94-96/100 « The 2023 Haut-Bages Libéral is fabulous. Deep, layered and exquisitely beautiful, the 2023 bristles with tension. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, leather, menthol and licorice grace a wine of depth, richness and sensuality. It's a terrific effort from proprietor Claire Villars-Lurton. »
Martin : 92-94/100 « The nose was quite backward when I tasted it, though Claire Villars-Lurton commented that it had just closed down the week that I visited. It will be more open once in bottle. The palate is more indicative: clean, fresh, linear and nicely focused, with more grip than the Ferrière. Touches of graphite linger on the finish. This is very classically styled, and there is nothing wrong with that-a wine for Pauillac purists and those seeking wines with less sulfites. »

Galloni : 92-95/100 « The 2023 Durfort-Vivens is a very pretty, understated wine. In 2023, Durfort is marked by a brighter profile than usual: red fruit, blood orange and flowers. Medium in body and persistent, with good energy and very fine balance, the 2023 is promising. Even though it's showing a touch of oak at this stage, this layered and sumptuous offering is showing well. »

Claire Lurton likes to present this wine from tank, before the wine is put into wood, in order to show the quality of the fruit. »

The palate is medium- bodied with crisp black fruit on the entry, quite spicy and peppery in style. It's a more vivacious Ferrière compared to other vintages, closing with a smooth and harmonious finish. This is a lovely Margaux from Claire Lurton. »

Eventually, it offers predominantly black fruit laced with black truffles and light earthy scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. It veers more toward red fruit laced with white pepper on the cohesive and classically styled finish. This is maybe not a long-term Gazin, but it has an air of sophistication. »

It is focused and delineated, with black fruit mixed with graphite and melted tar, almost Saint-Julien in style. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, quite minerally and lively without the depth of the 2022, yet rather elegant and refined on the finish. This constitutes a very gracious Margaux and as I tried second and third bottles towards the end of my trip, it just seemed to get better and better. »
