Phélan-Ségur is one of Saint-Estèphe's historic estates, with a 70-hectare vineyard on the front line of the Gironde estuary, bordered to the north by Calon-Ségur and to the south by Meyney and Montrose. The arrival in 2018 of a new Belgian owner (Mr. Van de Vyvere) ushered in a new era and new ambitions at Phélan-Ségur: 20 hectares under organic management, braiding of the vines (instead of trimming), gradual reduction in planting density to 8,000 vines/ha to combat summer drought, sparing use of sulfur, parcel-by-parcel vinification using indigenous yeasts...
Recent vintages have been very convincing, with racy wines combining intensity, vinosity and finesse in the image of Calon-Ségur.
Terre de Vins : 96-98/100 Coup de ♥ “Pencil lead, tobacco and blueberry jelly dominate the very inviting nose. The palate is characterised by a full-bodied attack, with multiple tannins that are, however, very well integrated into the wine. The rest unfolds with elegance and length, the wine’s finely crafted structure lending great structure and persistence to the flesh, which is sap-filled and flavourful. The hints of menthol and graphite add a touch of freshness and class to the whole. Very coherent and very accomplished."
Bettane+Desseauve : 96/100 “Probably the finest Phélan-Ségur in several decades. Its complexity, vigour, balance and elegance place it on a par with the finest classified growths of the vintage.”
La Revue du Vin de France : 94-96/100 “Built around fine Cabernets, it is robust, classic and aristocratic in the best sense of the word. The wine is ripe, refined and noble. Notes of black fruit, graphite, a hint of spice and finely powdered tannins: this is the hallmark of this 2025.”
Vinous (N. Martin) : 93-95/100 "Mainly black fruit, the Cabernet-dominated scents of cedar and tobacco emerge within a couple of swirls, with just a light touch of tea leaves in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine-boned tannins matched by a silver thread of acidity. Very well balanced and unequivocally in the more elegant style, without the concentration or voluptuousness of the 2022. This is more sleek and refined, ergo, an earlier-drinking Phélan Ségur that delivers elegance and refinement. Just a lovely Saint-Estèphe."
Vinous (A. Galloni) : 91-93//100 "The 2025 Phélan Ségur is a gorgeous but quiet wine. Hints of dark raspberry, rose petal, mint, spice, mocha and blood orange fill out the layers. The fruit profile is more red-leaning than in many years, while the 2025 is on the lighter side structurally. It will be interesting to see what élevage brings. Savory overtones from the Cabernets suggest a bright future. There's certainly plenty to look forward to."
J-M Quarin : 90/100 “Rich black fruit aromas when the glass is swirled. Delicate on the palate at first, flavourful in the mid-palate, the wine melts on the palate. It finishes long and juicy, with a hint of tannin.”
