Mouton-Rothschild's second wine, which appeared in 1993, has since made its place among its peers (Carruades de Lafite, Forts de Latour, Pavillon Rouge) by offering each vintage a great Pauillac, full, fleshy, muscular, barely less deep and full-bodied than its famous big brother but with the same cassis finish. Petit Mouton has grown up!
J-M Quarin : 94/100 “A fresh hint of red berries, with a slight menthol note when the glass is swirled. Full-bodied on the palate, with a touch of Saint-Estèphe character as it develops, offering both fresh and dark fruit flavours; the wine unfolds in a juicy and powerful manner. It finishes long, with a touch of positive austerity, as the flavour is very much present.”
Bettane+Desseauve : 93-94/100 “The stylistic link with the great wine remains evident in its remarkable body. However, its tannic character suggests waiting a while before fully enjoying its potential.”
Vinous (N.Martin) : 91-93/100 "The 2025 Le Petit-Mouton has a very intense nose, blackberry and cassis mixed with violet and a touch of wild mint. The palate is medium-bodied, with pliant tannins, fine acidity, quite spicy on the mid-palate with a liberal sprinkling of black pepper, nicely focused with a classically styled finish. It will need two to three years in bottle."
Vinous (A. Galloni) : 89-91/100 "The 2025 Le Petit-Mouton is powerful and dense in the glass, revealing super-ripe black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, spice and a healthy kick of French oak. Of all the wines in the Mouton stable, the Petit-Mouton most shows the riper side of the year in both its flavor profile and texture. It will be interesting to see how this develops with élevage. For now, the 2025 is extroverted, leaning towards blowsy."
