Couhins' clear progress, seen in white wine since 2009, is now being felt in red wine. Here, it is not power that is sought but balance, aromatic delicacy and palatability.

    Galloni : 91-94/100
« The 2023 Couhins is an elegant, silky wine. Crushed flowers, blood orange, spice and raspberry all are very nicely delineated. Couhins is racy and polished, but also a bit less expressive than other recent vintages. I admire its energy, but even so, the 2023 is clearly still coming together. »

This classified growth, owned by INRA, has grown considerably since the Institute's researchers decided to apply the results of their most advanced research to it, and the arrival of Mr Derenoncourt as an advisor. In a rather lively and tense style, Couhins is today by its price the best deal among the white classified growths of Pessac-Léognan.

    Bettane & Desseauve : 90/100

    Galloni : 90-92/100

We no longer present Sociando-Mallet, which should be in a good place in the cellar of any wine lover, as the quality and above all the regularity of its last thirty vintages are so impressive. Without wishing to underestimate the hard work of the late Mr Gautreau since 1969, it must be said that the terroir, against the Gironde on a gravelly ridge comparable to that of Montrose, is indeed that of a Grand Cru Classé. Unavoidable 2016, the greatest wine of Sociando-Mallet since 1996.

    See the technical sheet

Galloni : 89-91/100 « The 2023 Sociando-Mallet is a deep, powerful wine. Black cherry, incense, blackberry, licorice and cloves add to an impression of somber gravitas. Unctuous and rich, the 2023 shows the natural intensity of the Merlot in this vintage. Sociando is pretty heady in this vintage. »
Martin : 89-91/100 « The 2023 Sociando-Mallet has a cohesive and focused bouquet, classic Sociando in style. A touch of freshly tilled soil and cedar develops in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with red berry fruit and lightly spiced with black pepper and cedar. Nicely balanced on the finish, this should develop well in bottle, although it lacks a bit of complexity. »

Martin : 91-93/100 « The 2023 Les Trois Croix has a slight metallic trait on the nose, though there seems to be sufficient black fruit underneath. This improves in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. It's fleshy and ripe, with fine structure and a touch of mineralité on the finish. This is just one of the best Fronsac wines out there. »

Very pale, crystalline colour, aromatic notes of lemon and grapefruit, lively and delicate on the palate, Carbonnieux is by its refined style the most Medoc style of Pessac-Léognan whites.

    Galloni : 91-93/100
« The 2023 Carbonnieux is a very pretty, promising wine. The open-knit, floral bouquet is immediately alluring, Medium in body and gracious, but with plenty of depth, Carbonnieux is beautifully refined in 2023. I admire its balance and poise. Hints of spice, crushed flowers and tobacco lift a core of dark blue- and black-toned fruits. »
    Martin : 84-86/100
« The 2023 Carbonnieux has a relatively light bouquet with black cherries, wild strawberry and earthy notes, and touches of mushroom, though it is not as defined as I would like. The palate is medium-bodied with angular tannins on the entry, light red fruit but it needs more cohesion and flesh on the finish. I am not convinced by this showing I'm afraid. »

The very high quality of Cos d'Estournel's recent vintages is impressive, placing it undoubtedly among the first great classified growths of the Médoc. A single qualifier comes to mind when we think of Cos d'Estournel: monumental, for its wines as well as for its cellar.

    See the technical sheet

Galloni : 96-98/100 « The 2023 Cos d'Estournel is fabulous. Dark, resonant and inviting, the 2023 has so much to offer. All the elements are beautifully woven together. [...] Readers will find a Cos endowed with tremendous substance and intensity. I can't remember a young Cos with this much fruit concentration, yet there is nothing overdone here. I loved it. »
Martin : 94-96/100 « The aromatics deliver nearly immediate gratification: black cherries, wild strawberries, crushed violet petals and vanilla pod. It's all quite sumptuous but very well focused. [...] It's beautifully balanced with a very pure and seductive finish. Ultra-confidential white wine from Cos d'Estournel, with a predominance of Sauvignon Blanc (75%) on a terroir located at the northern tip of the Médoc. The proximity of the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean gives the wine its freshness, its mineral notes and its marine accents.

    »
Galloni : 91-93/100 « The 2023 Cos d'Estournel Blanc is quite powerful and not especially aromatic today. At this stage, it is mostly the wine's body that makes an impression. The 2023 has good depth, but it is clearly not expressive today. It will be interesting to see what time brings. »
Martin : 92-94/100 « The 2023 Cos d'Estournel Blanc offers slightly more tropical notes on the nose than Les Pagodes, with a touch more depth-hints of orange blossom and honeysuckle. The palate is well balanced with tangerine and lime, fine acidity, notable focus and a bright and tensile finish. This is another delicious white. It will be difficult to resist in its youth. »

    Galloni : 92-94/100
« The 2023 Les Pagodes de Cos makes a strong statement out of the gate. A blast of intense dark fruit, leather, spice, menthol, game, licorice, dried herbs and chocolate infuses the palate with remarkable textural intensity. Ample and resonant in the glass, with fabulous balance, Les Pagodes is exceptionally fine in 2023. The long, sustained finish is a thing of beauty. »
Martin : 90-92/100 « The 2023 Les Pagodes de Cos has a plush crushed strawberry, cassis and violet-scented bouquet that displays some prudent use of oak. Located at the northern tip of the Médoc, the vineyard of Château La Goulée was abandoned in 2007 when Cos d'Estournel acquired it. The aim was to produce an intensely flavoursome, tasty and charming wine thanks to an almost (90%) pure Merlot grape variety.

The contract was perfectly fulfilled with this magnificent 2019, a real delicacy rated 92/100 by M. Galloni (Vinous).

    Galloni : 91-93/100
« The 2023 G d'Estournel is a seriously beautiful wine. Dark, layered and super-expressive, the 2023 has so much to offer. An explosion of red/purplish fruit, spice, rose petal, lavender and mocha makes a strong opening impression. This is an especially bold, fruit-forward vintage for the G, perhaps because of the inclusion of recently acquired parcels planted on clay/limestone soils. The 2023 is all about harmony, and there is plenty of that. »
    Martin : 86-88/100
« The 2023 G d'Estournel has a very intense and ripe bouquet for this cuvée compared to recent vintages. It's opulent, almost ravishing. The palate is quite precocious with a granular texture and fine acidity, revealing a little graphite and a dab of black pepper on its linear finish. It is just missing a little amplitude, turning a little spirituous on the aftertaste. »

Previously settled on firm tannins that made them stark in their youth, Cos Labory's wines have for the last ten years changed in style, becoming more pleasant and gaining in depth and refinement (its vineyard is adjacent to those of Lafite-Rothschild and Cos d'Estournel).

The Audoy family having sold its vineyard to the neighboring Cos d'Estournel at the beginning of 2023, a new era begins at Cos Labory.

    Galloni : 91-93/100
« The 2023 Cos Labory is a powerful, dense wine. Big tannins wrap around a core of dark fruit, gravel, spice, menthol and mocha. This strapping, old-school Saint-Estèphe packs plenty of punch. Clearly, Cos Labory is a work in progress. It will be some years before the Cos team can turn the estate around, as there is so much work to be done, especially in rehabilitating the vineyards. Even so, this is a fine effort for a property in transition. »
Martin : 89-91/100 « The 2023 Cos Labory is the first vintage made completely by Michel Reybier's team. The 2023 went through a parcel selection and use of peristaltic pumps. It has a slightly richer and more decadent bouquet, perhaps reflecting the summer heat more than Cos d'Estournel. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannins, fleshy in style but there is satisfying structure in situ. Quite marine-influenced towards the finish with a tangy peppery aftertaste. It's not far from the 2022 in quality. »

« The 2023 d'Issan is a powerful, dense wine, especially for a property where the wines tend to be more understated. A rich, muscular Margaux, the 2023 d'Issan exudes intensity in all of its dimensions. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2023 is going to need a number of years to shed some of its considerable baby fat. »
Martin : 88-90/100 « The 2023 d'Issan has a very pure bouquet with black cherries, cassis and blueberry fruit, though I feel that other recent vintages have shown a touch more complexity. The palate is well balanced and cohesive with fine and quite edgy tannins. There is an impressive symmetry to this d'Issan with a very poised and quite persistent finish. « The 2023 Pape Clément is one of the most exciting wines I have tasted here in a long time, maybe ever. Intensely aromatic and layered, the 2023 is simply stunning. Dried flowers, mint, licorice, mocha, cedar and tobacco soar out of the glass. The purity of the flavors is simply mind-blowing. Galloni : 92-94/100 « The 2023 Fombrauge is terrific. Rich, deep and explosive, the 2023 packs a serious punch. There's plenty of the textural richness Bernard Magrez loves, but it's just a bit tempered compared to previous years. Succulent red cherry, plum, rose petal, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha infuse the 2023 with notable depth. Bright acids refresh the palate nicely. »

« The palate is medium-bodied with slightly granular tannins and sharp blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with black pepper. It demonstrates fine cohesion on the silky smooth finish. This should give 10 to 12 years of drinking pleasure. I would aver that this is a much more elegant Fombrauge than you would have found 10 years ago. »

On a magnificent gravelly hillock that has nothing to envy that of its neighbour Montrose, Meyney (Crédit Agricole property) is a serious candidate for the title of best Médoc bourgeois cru in each vintage. Long, complex, refined, distinguished tannins: a great Médoc cut for long ageing. Recommended by Mr. De Boüard (Angelus) from the 2014 vintage.

    Galloni : 91-93/100
« The 2023 Meyney is terrific. Silky and polished, the 2023 shows a side of Meyney I have not seen before. There's also terrific freshness and overall brightness. Dark red plum, blood orange, chalk, mint and dried herbs are all beautifully delineated. More than anything else, I admire the wine's poise. »
Martin : 89-91/100 « The 2023 Meyney is surprisingly backward on the nose with blackberry, kirsch, touches of black pepper and loamy aromas. It remains understated in the glass yet gains purity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Maybe a little conservative in style, it stays within the confines of the vintage yet feels harmonious.»

In 2000, Malescot Saint-Exupéry woke up under the leadership of Michel Rolland. Since then, in a generous and serene style, very rich for a Margaux, he has never ceased to distinguish himself. As the Revue du Vin de France wrote: "In 10 years, it is the wine that has made the most progress among the Margaux wines".

    Galloni : 92-94/100
« The 2023 Malescot St. Exupéry is a powerful Margaux that will need a bit of time to come together. Potent tannins wrap around a core of red/purplish fruit, lavender, mint and dried herbs. These days, Malescot is not quite as unyielding as it used to be, but this remains a decidedly old-school Margaux in style and overall philosophy. »
Martin : 92-94/100 « Displaying blackberry and briar on the nose, the 2023 Malescot Saint Exupéry demands some coaxing from the glass. There's just a light, confit-like aroma in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine structure, slightly powdery tannins, modest weight and noticeably fresh acidity and salinity, the latter especially prominent toward the finish. More classically hewn compared to the 2022, this will require five or six years in bottle. Classy. »

Since the arrival of Bruno Borie in 2003, Ducru-Beaucaillou has been flying from success to success.  No one has forgotten that, until 1980, Ducru was the greatest of the Médoc's second growths, a position it is now regaining. Bravo !

    See the presentation video

Grand avenir. »
    Galloni : 95-97/100
« The 2023 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a heady, sumptuous Saint-Julien. The aromatics alone are captivating. Truffle, rose petal, blood orange, pomegranate, spice and menthol build in a creamy, lavish Ducru. The 2023 is a classic Bruno Borie wine that emphasizes textural opulence. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous floral and spice-driven top notes. The balance of opulence and vibrancy is compelling. »

Martin : 94-96/100 « The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh entry. Showing moderate depth, it's quite linear in style and grippy. A faint touch of bell pepper emerges on the classically styled finish that reminds me of some of the old vintages of Ducru-Beaucaillou. »

Second wine of Ducru-Beaucaillou. As for the other wines made by Bruno Borie (Le Petit Ducru and Ducru-Beaucaillou), La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou has considerably progressed since 2003 to the point of becoming a direct rival of the 3rd/4th classified growths of St-Julien. Moreover, it now benefits from a contribution of vines purchased from Château Terrey-Gros-Cailloux.

    Galloni : 90-92/100
« The 2023 La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou marries sophistication with the textural richness that is such a signature here. All the elements are so well balanced. Jammy dark red fruit, pomegranate, blood orange, spice and mocha infuse the 2023 with tons of nuance. Supple tannins wrap it all together. This Saint-Julien screams with character. »
Martin : 91-93/100 « The 2023 La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou has a very perfumed and floral bouquet: plush red berry fruit, vanilla, cedar and blood orange, well-defined with deftly integrated new oak (60%). The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins that lend this La Croix a bit more backbone than recent vintages. It's very fresh; white pepper and thyme complement the bright red fruit, leading to an overtly peppery finish, with a touch of graphite on the aftertaste. »

Martin : 88-90/100 « The 2023 Madame de Beaucaillou has a delightful bouquet with brambly red fruit, rose petals and cedar. Less Petit Verdot in the blend means it is less floral than the 2022. The palate is grippy and quite peppery on the entry-a little angular at the moment, but barrel-maturation will smooth the edges. The arrival of Mr. Derenoncourt as a consultant in 2002 relaunched Prieuré-Lichine, giving it first of all a better aromatic dimension thanks to a more mature grape. The limitation of yields since 2009 has resulted in additional density and volume, which he lacked to compete with his peers. Progress hailed by the Revue du Vin de France, notably for its 2020, rated 95/100 « the most complete in a long time ».

« The 2023 Prieuré-Lichine offers up copious red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal and mint. This is very nicely perfumed. Silky tannins add to an impression of finesse. There is just a touch of dryness on the finish, which is the only real question mark here. Tasted two times. »
Martin : 91-93/100 « The 2023 Prieuré-Lichine has a well-defined and quite detailed bouquet with pretty black cherries, cedar and wilted violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, with light tannins matched by a crisp bead of acidity. It doesn't possess a dense or concentrated finish, yet there is balance here, and it will provide very pleasant drinking for 15 to 18 years. This is just a delicious Margaux wine in the making. »

Impossible to resist the unspeakable complexity of its bouquet, floral and fruity, spicy and liquorice, as well as the incredible depth of its fresh and sumptuous finish. Great art, all the glory of Cabernet Franc on a limestone hillside. Alain Vauthier and his children, Pauline and Édouard, manage the 7 hectares of Ausone like a (very) great Burgundy wine. Magistral!

    See the technical sheet

Galloni : 96-98/100 « The 2023 Ausone is a powerful, heady wine. Dark, layered and explosive, the 2023 possesses tremendous depth and tons of sheer resonance, something that becomes increasingly apparent with time in the glass. [...] The savory, mineral-drenched finish is eternal. All the 2023 needs is time. Readers lucky enough to own it should be thrilled. »
Martin : 96-98/100 « It has a wonderful bouquet that is very floral in style and perfectly controlled, perhaps more refined than the 2022. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth entry, finely tuned with impressive mineralité. It just gently "rolls out" on the languorous finish. This is a more understated Ausone compared to recent vintages, but it exudes sophistication and could easily surpass the Vauthiers' 2022. »

Second wine of Ausone, rare (1 ha in production out of the 7 ha of the Ausone vineyard), slightly less powerful but just as racy and energetic as the Grand Vin. And like it, it has a remarkable capacity for ageing.

    Galloni : 92-94/100
« The 2023 Chapelle d'Ausone is fabulous, as it often is. Succulent, ripe tannins give the 2023 tons of pure charm. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and mocha all run through this sumptuous yet structured Saint-Émilion. This will be stellar in another few years time. »
Martin : 90-92/100 « The 2023 Chapelle d'Ausone has a well-defined bouquet with dark berry fruit, bell pepper and light gravel scents, nicely focused with a subtle marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, though it is not as fleshy as previous vintages with quite a strict and linear finish. I suspect it will fill out during barrel-maturation. »

Galloni : 90-93/100 « The 2023 Moulin Saint-Georges emerges from a small, 7-hectare property in front of Ausone. The richer side of the year comes through in the wine's dark blue/purplish fruit profile, lavender, licorice and spice notes. There's a bit of tannin here, but élevage should help this come together. »
Martin : 90-92/100 « The élevage shapes this Saint-Émilion nicely. It's a little woody at first, but that dissipates nicely with a few swirls of the glass, revealing a refreshing, marine-influenced bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth entry, quite a sensual and fleshy Moulin Saint-Georges, though the new oak is quite vocal and dominates the finish. »

To be sure, readers should expect a dense, opulent style, but it works quite well here. Succulent red/purplish fruit, spice, rose petal and citrus peel build into the deeply satisfying, resonant finish. Well done. »

Apart from the first great classified growths, no other Bordeaux wine is as world famous as Lynch-Bages. Its worldwide success comes as much from its opulent, full-bodied and robust style, from its unfailing regularity since 1975, and from its media promotion orchestrated by Jean-Michel Cazes. Lynch-Bages was the first wine sent into space (Discovery shuttle in 1985). It is even said that it is him who gave the taste of Bordeaux to the Americans!

    Galloni : 94-97/100
« The 2023 Lynch-Bages is a dark, brooding wine. In so many vintages, Lynch-Bages is a wine of sensuality, but in 2023, it is quite the powerhouse. Formidable tannins wrap around a core of black fruit, spice, menthol, licorice and gravel. This is a somber, introspective Lynch-Bages with a ton of Cabernet Sauvignon character. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. »
Martin : 93-95/100 « On the nose, glossy black fruit mixes with touches of cassis, graphite, violets and blood orange, perhaps demonstrating more horsepower than I anticipated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, saturated tannins. There is a lovely symmetry to this Pauillac (not unlike Latour), armed with a cashmere texture and plenty of backbone on the finish, even though I would not describe it as a "grippy" Lynch-Bages. There's plenty of graphite character on the aftertaste. Excellent. »

Full-bodied, fat and with a characteristic vanilla woody taste, the dry white wine of Lynch-Bages plays the charm and fabric card. Less than 2000 cases produced each year, far insufficient for global success.

    Galloni : 92/100
« The 2023 Blanc de Lynch-Bages, just bottled a week before this tasting, is terrific. Bright citrus peel, dried flowers, almond, lime and crushed rocks lend quite a bit of nuance. A dollop of Muscadelle adds tropical flair without
overpowering the balance. This is very nicely proportioned. »
    Martin : 87-89/100
« The 2023 Blanc de Lynch-Bages has a fresh, orchard-fruit-scented bouquet, maybe a bit constrained since it was only bottled two weeks prior to my visit. The palate is well balanced with more complexity than the aromatics at the
moment-pear and white peach, with almond shavings toward the finish. Fine. »
