The white wine of Smith Haut Lafitte has built up a solid reputation over the last 10 years, even if it is not a grand cru classé (but Haut-Brion blanc and Pape-Clément blanc are not either). A happy marriage of wood and fruit, it always delivers a beautiful aromatic complexity, from lime blossom to citrus, and a lively, rich and fine structure.

    Galloni : 94-96/100
« The 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is airy, weightless and gracious. Thre's lovely richness and texture but without the opulence of most warm, dry years. The 2022 will be a gorgeous wine at the dinner table. »
Martin : 94-96/100 « It has a very perfumed nose with yellow plums, jasmine, walnut and touches of fennel. Waxy in texture, with hazelnut and white pepper toward the saline, almost creamy finish. »

Started in 2003, the Clos Louie adventure is a textbook case: a dolly vineyard (2.3 ha) on a beautiful clay-limestone terroir of Castillon, careful biodynamic cultivation, double manual sorting during the harvest, low-intervention vinification, gentle maturation in 500-litre demi-muids.

Louison et Léopoldine is the other Clos Louie wine, a tribute to Cabernet Franc (80%) from 50-year-old vines. Clean, bright fruit and remarkable aromatic freshness: a real nugget!

A family estate reawakened in 2011 by the arrival of son Paul Garcin, a former rock musician on the Bordeaux scene. An instant switch to organic and biodynamic viticulture, to produce intuitive, artist's wines that are immediately sapid and have a strong pleasure note. As a deliberate iconoclast, Paul Garcin makes a point of offering different facets to each Haut-Bergey vintage: a classic cuvée vinified and matured in the tradition of Bordeaux's great growths, the more contemporary Cuvée Paul, and single-vineyard cuvées highlighting their respective terroirs.

An approach hailed by the Revue du Vin de France: "A modern vision and the ability to reinvent oneself without betraying: Haut-Bergey symbolises the current vitality of Bordeaux's most historic vineyard".

    See the technical sheet

Practically abandoned in 1993 when Mr. and Mrs. Cathiard bought it, Smith Haut Lafitte is today one of the 10 greatest vintages of the Bordeaux left bank. The road they have travelled is truly admirable, and the Cathiards have spared no effort: restoration of the vineyard, construction of a vat room and underground cellar, introduction of state-of-the-art equipment, conversion to organic viticulture...

Bravo ! »
    Galloni : 95-97/100
« The 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte is a regal, elegant wine. In many vintages, the Grand Vin is more immediate and alluring. The 2022 is quite reticent. »
Martin : 95-97/100 « The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very elegant and focused, fine-boned with an exceptionally pure and caressing tobacco-tinged finish. This is going to grow to be a wonderful, delicious Smith-Haut-Lafitte. »

    Le Point : 18/20
« Nez floral, bouche souple, fraîche, élégante, bonne longueur, frais et fin, bien tramé. Beaucoup d'élégance. »
    Quarin : 97/100
« Nez très aromatique, fin fruité, pur, subtil, mûr, frais et floral. Texture minutieuse dès l'entrée en bouche, le vin se développe très aromatique au milieu, avec une grâce douce et moelleuse unique sur cette appellation. Elle me rappelle le 1947. Le vin fond au palais, tout en rebondissant en finale, long, séveux et envoûtant. »
    Galloni : 93-95/100
« This full-throttle Saint-Julien is not exactly subtle, but its balance is impeccable. You should expect an unctuous, dense wine with tons of concentration, a good deal of new oak and all the pedigree to hold it all together. »
Martin : 95-97/100 « I am impressed by its delineation and focus; frankly, these are the nicest aromatics I've encountered for a while at this address. I cannot remember a Gruaud at this nascent stage that exhibits this level of energy and tension deriving from the Cabernet Sauvignon extracted at the beginning of vinification. There's much more precision here. Gruaud reborn. »

Since 2009 and the acquisition by Mr. Lorenzetti, we can talk about a new vintage wine classified in Pauillac. Unworthy of his ranking, Pédesclaux had until then disappeared from the Bordeaux scene. The ambition and resources of the new owner are there: complete overhaul of the installations, acquisition of new plots of land ideally located. The first vintages offer the image of a supple and easily accessible Pauillac, at a price that defies all competition in the appellation.

This beautiful 24-hectare estate has been run by Alain Moueix since 1992. He applies the same philosophy and methods as at Fonroque (Saint-Émilion): organic farming since 2015, biodynamic certification in 2018, search for freshness and elegance through controlled extractions... Mazeyres offers delicate and measured wines, without blush, with a great finesse of flavor that increases even more in recent vintages.

An oenologist by training, Ms. Papon-Nouvel owns two tiny properties at the bottom of Saint-Émilion near Canon-La Gaffelière: Petit Gravet Aîné (2.4 ha) and Clos Saint-Julien (1.3 ha), where the vines are mainly old cabernets francs. From the vine to the cellar, she manages all the stages in the production of her wines on her own and, whatever the vintage, her talent as an instinctive winemaker gives wines of natural elegance and exemplary sweetness.

« The 2022 is one of the most exquisite wines I have ever tasted here. This salivating and wonderfully vibrant Saint-Émilion is lights out. »
Martin : 91-93/100 « The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and a gentle build in the mouth. There's a fresh Cabernet Franc-driven finish. The more I sip this, the more I like it. »

The 2022 vintage is rated 18.5/20 (Best Bottle of the tasting) by Bourgogne Aujourd'hui "Pure, precise nose, with superb finesse and spicy accents. The palate is full, straightforward and concentrated, with morello cherry and blood orange aromas: magnificent" (September 2023).

Also rated 91-93/100 by N. Martin "The palate is medium-bodied, with crisp black fruits and fine tannins. There's a little compactness towards the finish at the moment, but it's an excess of freshness and tension. A hint of white pepper surfaces in the aftertaste. What a beautiful Marsannay this will be." (November 2023)

Rated 91-93/100 by N. Martin (Vinous) "The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Noirots 1er Cru has an opulent bouquet with black cherries, rose petals and a touch of sous-bois. The medium-bodied palate offers more succulence and structure than the Chatelots, with insistent grip and firm backbone on the finish. There's a bit of sinew here, so it will require three or four years in bottle to loosen up." (November 2023)

Rated 93-95/100 by N. Martin (Vinous) "The Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022, one of the last to be picked over three different passes, has a plush and expressive bouquet with dark cherries, raspberry coulis and light violet petal aromas that recede and reveal orange rind and yuzu scents. The palate is medium-bodied with firm grip on the entry. It's a solid Charmes-Chambertin that is Mazoyères in style because, well, that's where it's from! A serious Charmes-Chambertin that will age well in bottle." (November 2023)

The 2022 vintage is rated 96+/100 by La Revue de France "The chiselled, haunting flesh of this noble wine has a cooler, pulper character, carried by a racy sapidity and very sapid tannins" (March 2024)

Also rated 95-97/100 by N. Martin (Vinous) "The palate is medium-bodied, with firm tannins and darker fruit than the Charmes-Chambertin, with impressive precision on the finish. This wine is extremely promising." (January 2024)

Owning the largest parcel (6 ha) of Clos Vougeot and the only producer vinifying and maturing its wines within the Clos, Château de la Tour is the custodian of the Clos Vougeot tradition. Always vinified unstemmed, its wines are powerful (certified organic from the 2021 vintage), structured and long-lasting.

The 2022 vintage is rated 91-93/100 by N. Martin "The Clos de Vougeot Cuvée Classique Grand Cru 2022 comprises around 50% whole bunches. It has a very well-defined bouquet with aromas of black cherry, raspberry, heather and light truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, fresh and saline tannins, silky and what looks like a more accessible Clos Vougeot as Edouard Labet understands it. Yet it has the substance to age for more than 15 to 20 years." (November 2023)

François Labet, owner of Château de la Tour in Vougeot, manages the family estate (10 ha in Beaune and Gevrey) with equal talent. He applies the same quality principles: organic farming, non-éraflée harvesting, long ageing (two winters minimum). Far from being the most talked-about domaine, but a wise choice for connoisseurs, according to Bourgogne Aujourd'hui: "to be seized as a matter of urgency, as the quality of the wines has been so consistent for a very long time".

The 2022 vintage is rated 90-92/100 by N. Martin "The Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2022, a blend of La Justice, Les Crais and La Jouises, has a pleasant, fragrant bouquet of mulberry and raspberry, with just a hint of lavender/potpourri in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a rather "fresh" Gevrey-Chambertin with a hint of brine giving sapidity on the finish. Promising." (November 2023)
