Delicately perfumed (the aromatic bouquet is always very floral, with violets and peonies in the lead) and elegantly suave whatever the vintage, La Conseillante occupies a special place among the greatest Pomerols, perhaps the most endearing of them. Its finesse and superiorly sensual and refined texture are reminiscent of the great wines of the Côte de Nuits (on the Vosne-Romanée side). However, behind the apparent friendliness of La Conseillante lies a wine of great energy and excellent ageing potential.

Galloni : 96-98/100 « The 2022 La Conseillante is simply fabulous and also clearly one of the wines of the year. In fact, the 2022 is one of the best recent vintages I can remember tasting. »
Martin : 97-99/100 « Blackberry, blueberry, hints of iris flower, perhaps more floral than L'Évangile and Cheval Blanc. Saline both on the finish and aftertaste, Marielle Cazaux has crafted one of the most intellectual La Conseillante wines in recent years. »

A new chapter opened at L'Évangile in 2018 with the arrival of Saskia de Rothschild: conversion to  organic farming, rejuvenation of the technical team led by a new cellar mistress (Juliette Couderc), new qualitative ambitions and a new style focused on distinction and aromatic refinement. Clearly, Évangile wants to compete with its two prestigious immediate neighbors Cheval

Galloni : 95-97/100 « More than anything, the 2022 impresses with its gorgeous inner sweetness and exceptional balance. In short, the 2022 is a classic Évangile. »
Martin : 95-97/100 « There's plenty of rondeur, nicely judged acidity, pliant tannins (more than Cheval Blanc?) and pure with a dab of white pepper and clove. Classic in style. Very harmonious on the finish. This is a lovely, discrete Pomerol from an estate moving in the right direction - fast. »

A talented and perfectionist winemaker, Denis Durantou, at the service of a great terroir on the edge of the church of Pomerol between Lafleur and Clinet. L'Église-Clinet is one of the most subtle Pomerols in terms of its aromatic precision, fine grain and satiny texture. Mr. Durantou passed away far too soon in 2020, but fortunately he has three daughters who are united and determined to continue their father's work.

Galloni : 96-98/100 « The 2022 L'Église-Clinet is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage on the Right Bank. »
Martin : 98-100/100 « There's not a hair out of place, exuding the essence of this Pomerol estate with an exceptionally long, intense and paradoxically tender finish. It's a wine that may leave you spellbound... just like this barrel sample. »

Vieux Château Certan is certainly, with a high proportion of Cabernet Franc (30% on average), the most classic, firm and distinguished Pomerol wine. It does not have the softness and immediate charm of other great Pomerol, but still keeps all these promises as it ages. Very classy!

Galloni : 98-100/100 « The 2022 Vieux Château Certan is a wine of tremendous sophistication and polish. I expected to see a more opulent VCC, but the 2022 is surprisingly delicate and nuanced. There's really not much more to say except that the 2022 is magical. »
Martin : 97-99/100 « The Cabernet is very expressive this year and so while it is a real Left Bank/Right Bank hybrid, it is, at the same time, quintessentially Pomerol. Chapeau Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont. »

The most flamboyant, sensual and extroverted Pomerol ever, under the direction of Michel Rolland. But also one of the rarest (800 cases per year).

100 % merlot. »
Galloni : 94-96/100 « The 2022 La Violette is a gorgeous wine that marries the richness of the year with the energy of the Pomerol plateau and the brightness of the year. The 2022 is rich and quite deep, but never heavy. »

Like Pétrus, Le Pin is 100% Merlot. But if Pétrus has adopted a more classic style in recent years, Le Pin remains a hedonistic wine, often exuberant, sometimes even exotic. And unlike Pétrus, Le Pin is much rarer (500 cases per year).

100 % merlot. »
Galloni : 95-97/100 « The 2022 Le Pin is racy and nicely textured, but it also comes across as somewhat closed. »
Martin : 96-98/100 « It has a quasi-Burgundian bouquet, extremely pure and floral, fleeting glimpses of blueberry and blackcurrant, very perfumed in style. Wonderful balance, velvety in texture, it leans toward a more opulent Le Pin. »

A small vineyard of 8 ha of old vines (70% Merlot), owned by Clos Fourtet. Superb wine, balanced and fruity and tasty, for a very modest price, which rightly became a grand cru classé in 2012. Totally agree with La Revue du Vin de France "The best quality/price ratio in Saint-Émilion".

Assemblage : 90 % merlot, 10 % cabernet franc. »
Galloni : 90-92/100 « The 2022 Côte de Baleau is quite racy and extroverted in this vintage, as one might expect. Côte de Baleau is usually pretty forthcoming. The 2022 might need some time to come together. »

The terraces of Moulin Saint-Georges (7 ha) face those of Ausone (same owner). Thanks to the quality of its terroir and the refined style of its wines, Moulin Saint-Georges is a sure bet in the appellation.

Galloni : 90-93/100 « Super-ripe red cherry fruit, blood orange, menthol, spice and leather fill out the layers in a Saint-Émilion that boasts tons of fruit density and the tannins to match. With today 11 ha, the vineyard of Valandraud allows Mr. Thunevin to tighten his selections for the great wine and his second, Virginie de Valandraud (there is a 3rd, Clos Badon, and even a 4th wine!). Rich in colour, always delicious with an elegant tannic structure, Virginie de Valandraud makes those who think that second wines have no soul lie.

The amateur looking for fine and easily digestible classified great wines should be interested in Fonroque. In organic cultivation since 2006 and biodynamic cultivation since 2008, Fonroque offers an original vision of the terroir of the Saint-Émilion plateau, made of freshness, elegance, controlled and melting power. Alain Moueix, its owner, clearly shows the way forward for the future of the great wines of Bordeaux, all shores combined.

Both the 2019 and 2020 vintages were rated 94/100 by the Revue du Vin de France.

Troublant ! »

Rocheyron is the result of a friendly and professional partnership between Sylvio Denz (Faugères and Lafaurie-Peyraguey) and Peter Sisseck (Pingus). Since 2010, they have been investing in this small 8-hectare vineyard, located entirely on the asteriated limestone plateau characteristic of Saint-Émilion: tilling the soil, conversion to organic farming (certified in 2020), gentle vinification at low temperatures... Rocheyron is constantly progressing, and each year offers wines with an unequalled tannic softness.

Bought out in 2017 by the reinsurer SCOR, a page is turned in Troplong-Mondot, a formidable terroir in Saint-Emilion. Up to and including 2016, these are the richest in extract and most generous wines of the appellation, made by Christine Valette and her husband, under the aegis of Michel Rolland.

Radical break in style from the 2017 vintage, with less dense but oh so precise, elegant and racy wines, confirmed in 2018 by Mr. Galloni (vinous) "The 2018 is regal, refined and absolutely exquisite", rated 97/100.

In 2012, Haut-Brion bought and combined two grands crus classés (Tertre-Dauguay and L'Arrosée) on the slopes of Saint-Émilion (Côte Ausone), and put a foot in the right bank, called Quintus because it is their fifth property (after Haut-Brion, La Mission HB, Laville HB and Latour HB).

Their first objective is to make fine, long wines, focusing on freshness and delicacy rather than power or density, more typical of the left bank than the right bank.

Second objective: to shine in the next Saint-Emilion classifications (its immediate neighbours are Ausone, Belair-Monange, Angélus and Canon, all 1st classified grands crus).

Advised by Mr. Derenoncourt, Clos Fourtet regularly and unobtrusively demonstrates that the upper part of the Saint-Émilion plateau can produce wines as great as the Ausone or Pavie hillsides. Sobriety, depth, finesse and intensity are exemplary.

Galloni : 96-98/100 « The 2022 Clos Fourtet is fabulous. Rich, sensual and layered, the 2022 bristles with the energy found in the best wines of the year. »
Martin : 95-97/100 « The palate is refined with filigree tannins, one of the most mineral-driven Clos Fourtets I recall at this stage, with a sophisticated and harmonious finish. Mathieu Cuvelier and his team have overseen a sublime Saint-Émilion. »

Purchased in 1996 by the Chanel group (also in Rauzan-Ségla), Canon required a complete restoration, both of the vines and the cellar/vat room tool. Since 2008, Canon has fully justified its status as a 1er grand cru classé, with brilliant, distinguished wines that draw their energy from the Cabernets francs at the top of the limestone plateau.

Galloni : 96-99/100 « The 2022 Canon is elegant and sensual, with virtually no sensation of tannin. A wine with no beginning and end, Canon is totally seamless. Haute couture. »
Martin : 96-98/100 « The palate is very fresh on the entry, announcing a relatively linear Canon. This is one of the more intellectual and saline Canon wines in recent years. »

    Galloni : 96-98/100
« The 2022 Valandraud is magnificent. Rich and sumptuous to the core, the 2022 offers up inky red/purplish fruit, blood orange, spice, mocha and espresso, with nearly seamless texture and fabulous balance. »
Martin : 95-97/100 « This is a Valandraud with a V12 engine. It will need several years in bottle. It manages to maintain balance and purity, thankfully not imposing or fatiguing unlike some others. Jean-Luc Thunevin has crafted an excellent Saint-Émilion here. »

    Galloni : 93-95/100 « The 2022 L'If is a powerhouse. This brooding, virile Saint-Émilion packs a huge punch. »
